ClassroomPEN, Wireless Bluetooth Speaker and Audio Books

Words make more sense if you experience and feel them. The three books in the ‘Let’s Go….’ Series are about reflecting on everyday scenes or visits, a reinforcement of visual memory with sounds. The illustration on each page is full of sounds. Touch the bird and hear her call, touch the car and hear “Beep Beep!” But that is not all - each book is a picture thematic dictionary - touch the object and hear its name spoken, in English, French, Spanish… or any another of the 26 languages the series comes in! What’s more, you can add your own voice to any sound spot. Using unique technology, each page is laminated and the spine designed to ensure the book lays flat to A3 size - giving children scope to see and hear in minute detail, and relive their everyday experiences. In the process they build up their vocabulary and speaking skills. “My 3 year old Grand-daughter spent one hour going through the 12 page Let’s Go to the Park. She was on her own and just enjoyed the way she could control the responses – the audio – from every page. I had to help her with recording, but the amazement in hearing her voice was palpable!”

PENpal

PENpal is a device that plays back audio when it touches printed books, posters, stickers giving a multisensory reading experience. Each PENpal can read over 1700 books and posters and this list is always growing as new publications are launched. Mantra Lingua books are all in dual language, so PENpal will play back audio every time it touches a page - in English or in a choice of over 60 languages. PENpal is a flexible and portable device with great potential for both classroom and personal use. For mainstream teachers, it represents an excellent tool for group work and a fun way for pupils to add contextual detail and notes to printed materials, and outside of the education environment it can be both fascinating and comforting for a young child to hear stories and information in their own voice, or that of a friend or relative. Stickers and laundry labels

Making recordings with the recordable sticky labels is a revolutionary way to customise your own audio print resources easily and quickly. Make your posters, books, flash cards – any learning resource you like – come to life with sound. You can also share your recordings with as many people as you like! Teachers and children can record hours of audio content onto PENpal and share their recordings with others easily through the usb cable. The recordings are linked to Talking Stickers which can also be fixed to books, reports, mindmaps and concept maps, drawings, photographs, toys, oral histories and timelines, interactive displays, oral diaries, exhibit trails and used for labelling... the possibilities are endless! This is a fantastic way for teachers to develop differentiated resources tailored specifically to their pupils’ needs. It is also a fun way for children to build confidence in storytelling and speaking. Children can listen back to their own voices instantly and assess their progress. Recordings can be made in any language to create multi-lingual resources. There are two types of labels: the majority are designed for students where the content can be overwritten as often as they like. Typically, for example, one child may have a sheet of labels which they can use for various projects and documents. The same pen could then be used with another child and there will be no duplication. On the other hand, teachers often make their own audio content which they do not want pupils to overwrite. For this they can use Teachers’ Labels that only teachers can record on. We also have adhesive laundry labels which will stick to a huge range of surfaces! The Talking Stickers Resource was finalist at the international technology in education fair, BETT 2010.

Kamishibai Storytelling Theatre

The Kamishibai Storytelling Theatre was originally an old Japanese Story-telling device. It is now being revived in Europe, especially Germany, Sweden. It provides visual content or props for the teacher and class to story-tell in their own way. Illustrations from well-known stories are printed on A3 card without the usual accompanying text. Let the children talk about the Hungry Caterpillar in their own words and even languages. Kamishibai slows down story-telling, with plenty of scope for self-expression, speaking and listening, and encourages the development of teamwork and social etiquette within the group. The absence of text leaves space for imagination and oral expression. With Kamishibai Story Props including classic titles such as the Three Billy Goats Gruff, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Very Hungry Caterpillar... and many more you have plenty of scope for storytelling in the classroom. OR create your own Props with tactile elements, personal artwork and audio.

Kitabu e-book library

Our ‘Kitabu’ ebook library has over 550 titles in English and 37 dual language editions. There are well-known stories, stories from around the world, reference books, and also books set in today’s world. eBooks are a great way to improve reading and enjoying books. For dyslexic readers, there is a huge range of books in sans serif (Arial) and for those who specifically want ‘dyslexic friendly fonts’ we have a growing number of titles. We want to encourage reading, not by going through structured reading programmes but through the joy of stories and their telling. Therefore all text is spoken, even in the home language for dual language editions. For dyslexic children, text can be enlarged and listened to with words highlighted as they are spoken. Every story has a video just to enjoy narration and at the of each book there are flash cards with audio, label the parts, sequence the story, make word picture connections… These activities are designed to succeed and to encourage a love for reading. SENCOs can monitor progress and share notes on any page, suggesting difficult words for Teachers to be aware of. Kitabu ebooks are unique in their versatility. Prices range from £2.50/yr and bulk licences are feasible. Watch this video to see how our Kitabu e-book library can be a useful tool for children who are reluctant readers. Read alongside visuals and audio, repeat and enlarge text whenever you like, and personalise the book with helpful notes. We also have a range of books with dyslexic font.

YouCreate

YouCreate is our free 'desktop publishing' software that you can download onto your Mac or PC, and then use to create your own personalised publications. As the programme is on your own desktop, the process of adding and editing text and image (photographs, pictures or illustrations - anything you like!) is so much easier than other web-based systems. YouCreate has the unique feature of ensuring that each page has at least two soundspots, so that you can add personal recordings using PENpal. This way, you have the tools to create something together as a group, class or even as a school. Pupils can make anything from subject-specific projects to photobooks of trips or special events. Whether yearbooks, storybooks or even project books - the skills developed in writing effectively and concisely, changing and positioning images, narrating audio and sound editing, and generally collating the three separate aspects together, will all be beneficial at both KS2 and KS3 levels. Furthermore, once a publication is complete, you can send an electronic page-turning version by e-mail to various advocates: parents, experts, other classes and schools, inspectors etc, who could look through the work as an e-book. If you, as a teacher, think the quality is good, you can write to us to promote the publication to parents and sponsors. Of course, we'll ensure a special price to help the school gain a return to help with future projects.
